【GD TODAY】First Greater Bay Area ultrasound forum & WFUMB CoE held in Guangzhou
? ? ? The First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Ultrasound Forum and WFUMB CoE China contrast-enhanced ultrasound training program were recently held in Guangzhou. Over the course of four days, both domestic and international experts gathered to exchange ideas and conduct workshops on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) technology, sharing the latest research findings with the aim of promoting advanced ultrasound techniques in more places worldwide and benefiting a larger number of patients.

? ? ? ?The forum was organized by the Guangdong Medical Association and co-hosted by the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU), among other institutions. It focused on discussions and training sessions regarding the basic research, cutting-edge technology, and innovative applications of CEUS. The participating experts came from major domestic hospitals, as well as Italy, South Korea, and Azerbaijan.
? ? Applications of new ultrasound technologies such as CEUS, interventional ultrasound, and three-dimensional ultrasound, have the potential to increase the accuracy of ultrasound diagnosis to over 90%. However, China currently faces a shortage of talent in the field of ultrasound medicine, with an uneven distribution of ultrasound physicians across the country. This highlights the urgent need to cultivate more professional ultrasound medical personnel. From a global perspective, ultrasound technology remains underutilized in some countries.
? ? ? "Ultrasound is a non-invasive, economical, and effective diagnostic method. For common diseases, the diagnostic rate of ultrasound can exceed 90%. In recent years, there have been some new ultrasound technologies, such as CEUS, elastography, and interventional ultrasound, which can greatly improve the diagnostic rate of diseases," said Prof. Xie Xiaoyan, Director of the Department of Medical Ultrasonics at FAH-SYSU.
? ? ? "Moreover, ultrasound examinations are fast and do not require every patient to undergo CT scans or MRI scans, saving time and money for patients," she added, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the necessity of training ultrasound physicians.
? ? ? In her view, experienced ultrasound physicians are currently very scarce, and many medical schools do not offer ultrasound medicine majors. The training of ultrasound physicians relies more on practical experience gained in hospitals. As ultrasound technology continues to develop, people's reliance on and their trust in ultrasound are increasing. It leads to a growing demand for ultrasound physicians and higher expectations for their skills. " The general trend is to train ultrasound physicians so that they can have rich clinical experience and advanced technology skills," said Prof. Xie.
? ? ? According to Prof. Xie, since 2018, her department has organized four international training sessions on new ultrasound technologies, with over 100 ultrasound physicians from other countries participating in exchanges and training.
? ? ? ?Assoc. Prof. Tanapong Panpikoon, Specialist Diagnostic and Vascular Interventional Ultrasound and Candidate for the next President of Medical Ultrasound Society of Thailand, told GDToday that he was very happy to participate in this event which featured learning and experience exchanging. He said, "It's really vivid, taking the form of a case demonstration, and then on-site discussion, and finally, course learning." As China and Thailand entered a "visa-free era" from March 1 this year, he saw that it was more convenient to study and exchange in his field and looked forward to closer collaborations in the future.
? ? ? "The organizers of this forum are advanced in ultrasound programs. This is really helpful for us to improve our skills," said Sadigov Elshad, Director of the Ultrasound Department of Azerbaijan's N. Tusi Hospital and Vice Chairman of the Azerbaijan Radiological Association. Upon returning to his country, he plans to pass on the advanced knowledge to other physicians and improve ultrasound medicine in his motherland.
