A Delegation from University at Buffalo, the State University of New York Visits SYSU

On January 31, 2018, a delegation visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) to discuss cooperation in translational medicine. Members of the delegation included Professor Satish Tripathi, President of University at Buffalo, the State University of New York (UB); Professor Stephen Dunnett, Vice Provost for International Education, UB; Assistant Professor Yeong Christopher Choi, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center; Dr. Terence Lau, Director of Innovation and Technology Development, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU); Dr. Johnson Lau, CEO & Board Chairman, Athenex, among others. Professor Xiao Haipeng, Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegates at The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU.

At the meeting, Vice President Xiao Haipeng extended a warm welcome to the guests, and introduced SYSU, its medical sciences and affiliated hospitals. He reviewed the glorious history and fine educational tradition of SYSU’s medical development, and presented the teaching, research, service and construction of SYSU’s ten affiliated hospitals. Vice President Xiao Haipeng emphasized that in the background of the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and China entering a new era, SYSU is making efforts to build a “double first-class” university. With medical sciences as its strength, SYSU hopes to enhance cooperation with world-class medical schools and research institutions, realize win-win collaboration to improve research and service level in medical and health fields and create more well-being for the health of mankind.?

Afterwords, members of the delegation respectively introduced UB, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Athenex. They believed that SYSU is strong in medical education and research as well as medical service, while UB, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Athenex have established long-term partnership with PolyU. If through PolyU, they can conduct cooperation with SYSU in translational medicine and biomedicine, it will definitely promote medical education and research in Chinese and American universities as well as development of the healthcare industry. Dr. Terence Lau introduced the biotechnology and translational medicine cooperation platform under construction in PolyU, and invited SYSU to join the platform to strengthen cooperation with PolyU and UB in related fields.

After the meeting, the delegation went to SYSU’s Guangzhou East Campus to visit the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, and listened to the introduction of Tianhe-2 Supercomputer application and service. Professor Tao Liang, Deputy Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, and Ms. Gu Wenli, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, attended the meeting.?
