Introduction
The Institute of Precision Medicine (IPM), which was established in 2017, offers the best customized care based on each patient's genetic profile while also investigating the cutting edge of precision medicine. The IPM is led by Prof. Xiao Hai-peng. He is a Chief Scientist in Endocrinology, the Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and the President of the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU.
IPM specialize in a number of research areas, including but not limited to:
1.?Oncology
2.?Microbiome infection & Immunology
3.?Cardio cerebrovascular & Metabolic Disease
4.?Organ Transplant & Regenerative Medicine
5.?Big data & AI
The IPM consists of nine technology platforms. These include the following: a platform for studying stem cell study platform; an immunology platform; a pathomorphism and imaging platform; a biobank and medical big data platform; an animal and microbiome free of germs platform; a genomics platform; a proteomics platform; and a metabolomics platform. The IPM offers auxiliary tools and equipment for every platform.
1.?Stem cell research platform—Sonicator, Ultrasonic Doppler blood flow meter, liver/kidney perfusion system, smart plasma, etc.
2.?Immunology platform—Laser lightsheet microscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy, flow cytometer, multiphoton confocal microscopy, Hyperion Imaging System, etc.
3.?Biobank and medical big data platform—Automatic liquid nitrogen supply system, automatic liquid nitrogen storage system (-180℃), data storage and processing center (1P), etc.
4.?Pathomorphism and imaging platform—Freezing microtome, SlideMate, automatic dehydrator, dyeing and sealing system, automated FISH system, imaging scanner, fluoroscope, infrared laser imaging system, etc.
5.?Experimental physiology platform— Pressure myograph system, laser speckle blood monitor, live cell ion imaging system, multifunction imager, multi-mode microplate reader, etc.
6.?Germ-free animal and microbiome platform—In-vivo microCT, high-resolution small animal ultrasound imaging system, electric micromanipulation system, anaerobic incubator, Amaxa nucleofector, electrotransfection device, etc.
7.?Genomics platform—Laser microdissection and micromanipulation system, automated nucleic acid extractor, MassARRAY System, next-generation sequencer, real-time PCR, protein nucleic acid spectrophotometer, etc.
8.?Proteomics platform—AKTA purifier, Luminex, super centrifuge, density gradient fractionation system, microplate reader, etc.
9.?Metabolomics platform—Single molecule real-time sequencing system, Quadrupole LC/MS, Seahorse XFe96, etc.
????In addition to the nine technical platforms, the IPM has built some well-equipped facilities.
The germ-free mouse research facility, which came into use in December 2019, accommodates over 18 breeding isolators and 33 experimental isolators. The facility can provide conventional strains of germ-free mouse models, genetically engineered germ-free mouse models, and disease microbiome models for experimental studies. It can also provide 2000 qualified germ-free mice per year, and 10-20 germ-free mouse experiments can be carried out per year with the facility’resources.
The Biobank, covering an area of 276 square meters, has already established an automated ultra-low temperature storage system that can store 1 million samples. Currently, there are 737201 samples and 181007 person-times in the biobank data system.
Prospective Facilities
A new campus of 50,000 square meters, which includes a Medical Research Center and an animal center, is currently under construction in Nansha District, which is located in the center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. The Lau Luen Hung Research Center, which spans 9,000 square meters, will also be inaugurated in the future.
