16 full-time clinical pharmacists participate in clinical pharmacy services in 15 clinical departments

Introduction

The department of pharmacy covers a general division and a sub-division, and the general division consists of eight subunits: outpatient pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy, anesthesia pharmacy, pharmacy intravenous admixture service (PIVAS), clinical pharmacy center, phase I clinical trial laboratory and pharmaceutical laboratory. Our team consists of 197 pharmacists and technicians, supporting all aspects of medication management for inpatients and outpatients.

Featured by integration of advanced technology and robotics, we provided comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services for our patients. automated medication dispensing systems in the outpatient pharmacy cut the wait times for filling prescriptions. unit-dose tablet dispensers and a Swisslog Pillpick automated packaging and dispensing system in the inpatient pharmacy streamline pharmacy workflow and reduce the risk of dispensing errors. Our PIVAS is the Baxter training center in South China.

Clinical Services

Currently, 16 full-time clinical pharmacists participate in clinical pharmacy services in 15 clinical departments, such as Surgical ICU, Gastrointestinal Surgery Department, etc. To further improve clinical pharmacy services, we have established a research platform for individualized tumor cell culturing and chemotherapy sensitivity test, a precise drug use system guided by therapeutic drug monitoring and genotype detection, and an internet and client mobile app based medication management model for chronic diseases. The clinical pharmacy center has been awarded “National Key Clinical Specialties”?by the National Health and Family Planning Commission，and 5 clinical pharmacists have been awarded “national outstanding clinical pharmacists” by the Chinese Society of Clinical Pharmacy or the Hospital Pharmacy Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association.

Education

The department of pharmacy is very active in teaching and research works. The department is responsible for two curriculums (Therapeutic Drug Monitoring?and?Pharmacotherapeutics) teaching in Sun Yat-sen University, and serves as the national clinical pharmacist student and teacher training base. Each year we enroll 12 master's degree students and 12-15 pharmacists from other hospitals per year specializing in ICU, general medicine/infectious disease and anticoagulation for clinical pharmacy training. Apart from the teaching works, the department of pharmacy is keen on professional training. Till now, 9 pharmacists have pursued advanced studies of clinical pharmacy in the University of College London (UK), the University of Illinois at Chicago (US) and other Chinese colleges.

Research

In recent years, our staff have undertaken 12 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 26 projects funded by provincial and ministerial science organization. We have published more than 40 SCI papers and edited dozens of academic monographs, including pharmacy textbooks such as?clinical pharmacotherapy - organ transplantation,?clinical pharmacy practice teaching guidance,?clinical pharmacology,?clinical pharmacology (national medical e-bag),?etc.
