Introduction?

As a national and province key clinical specialty of China, the department of joint surgery at the first affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, contains 5 professors, 3 associate professors and 8 fellows/residents/lecturers, who are completely committed to medical service and patient satisfaction. Under the direction of Dr. Fu Ming, Chief of the joint department, we had successful periods with remarkable gains in clinical activity and research productivity.

Clinical Services

The clinical service continues to be a leader in the orthopaedic community, delivering the most up-to-date surgical techniques for primary hip and knee arthroplasty and complicated revision, the evaluation of problematic joint replacements, including treatment of metal-on-metal implant failures, and advanced treatments for infection, non-infective loosening and peri-prosthetic fractures. We also continue our studies of minimally invasive techniques of the hip and knee, rapid recovery protocols, and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. Recently, the department of sports medicine have been built. Surgical volumes continue to grow, length of stay has decreased due to our accelerated recovery program, and patient satisfaction scores have improved significantly. These achievements will allow us to provide better patient access and enable us to meet increasing demand for the joint department and the patients.

Education

Five of our staffs are doctoral supervisors and six of them are master supervisors, advising twenties domestic or international candidates of their degree. Most of the doctoral candidates have the opportunities to be an international co-educators by universities in the USA. Meanwhile, case reports and discussions are performed every Friday morning for the purpose of elevating the students’ clinical experience.

Research

Our faculty and staff are working on innovative research improving surgical techniques and basic research focusing on osteoplastic, osteoclastic and chondroid differentiation. As the first author or corresponding author, we published 30 articles on SCI journals and 22 on Chinese journals during these three years. At the same time, we acquired 29 projects and received more than 11 million supported by science foundation.
