Introduction

Pharyngolaryngology Division is the backbone department of Otorhinolaryngology Hospital, which contains the domestic first-class medical, teaching and research elite team: 3 doctoral mentors, 3 master mentors and 10 medical staffs, 9 out of them possess doctoral degrees. The division has 40 beds, serves in treatment of pharyngeal and laryngeal diseases and head and neck tumors, and sets up 6 professor outpatient clinics and a number of specialist outpatient clinics.

Clinical Services???????

Every year, around 1500 in-patients from all over the world are treated in this department, 70% of them are cancer patients, with over 300 cases of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. Over 2000 operations are performed annually. The division is domestically leading in radical and salvage surgery and multidisciplinary teamwork treatment of head and neck cancers, as well as skull base tumors. The division also runs in leading position of robot surgery; microscopic minimally invasive CO2 laser surgery, laryngeal disease microsurgery, voice correction training, airway stenosis, treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome and flap reconstructive surgery, etcetera.

The division staffs are responsible for undergraduates teaching of Sun Yat-sen University. A set of quality tutorials was established.?More than 10 doctoral postgraduate and nearly 20 master postgraduate were qualified trained in recent years, most of them received full scholarships and overseas study funding. The department is national residential training base as well. Todate, dozens of young residents receive clinical training and are qualified here. The department also holds annual 'Zhongshan Forum" national training conference with over 400 participants.

Most of the attending physicians own overseas study experience in well-known institutions (such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, M.D.Anderson Cancer Center, etc.).

Research

Pharyngolaryngology Division maintains a high quality level of basic and clinical research, with 6 National Natural Science Funds, 5 provincial and municipal major projects and dozens of other research projects obtained from 2012 to 2016. Around 50 high-quality SCI articles were published. Many innovative technology researches such as novel approaches for laryngeal cancer surgery, airway foreign body removement were accomplished and widely promoted.
