Introduction

The Division of Interventional Radiology (IR) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is among the earliest established and largest academic interventional radiology divisions nationwide and is selected and honored as the national key clinical disciplines. The Division provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic clinical services, trains the next generation of interventional radiologists, and performs research that advances the cutting-edge of the interventional radiology.

Clinical Services

The primary goal of the Division of Interventional Radiology at the First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU is to provide highest quality health care to our patients.

Our medical care teams consist of 9 board-certified interventional radiologists specializing clinical areas acrossing all specializations, supported by highly trained nurses and technicians. The Division possesses an independent operating room equipped with the most advanced real-time image navigation facilities, offers diagnosis and treatment services for diseases of wide spectrum including tumors of different origins, vascular diseases, biliary obstruction, prolapse of intervertebral disc, uterine disease, hemoptysis and other emergency, etc., and carries out over 2,000 interventional surgery and procedures annually.

Education

The IR division undertakes the teaching courses for undergraduate students, graduate students, residents and advanced training physicians and implement the continuing education programs regularly. A total of six doctors are certified as the tutors of ?master/doctoral degree (M.M./M.D.), recruiting 2-4 graduate students each year and many of them are sent abroad as visiting scholars or joint training students. As a certificated national standardized training base for residents, the IR divison also provides relevant training for residents of various disciplines and offers forefront education programs for advanced training physicians from other hospitals.

Research

The IR division is also known for its scientific accomplishments in fundamental, translational and clinical research. A large number of active researches are in process to deepen our understanding and knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of diverse diseases. These projects are supported with numerous grants funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ph.D. Programs Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong; Science and Technology Program of Guangzhou, etc., and a bulk of peer-review papers are published.

International Collaboration

The Division has long-term academic exchanges and broad cooperation with other academic institutions including universities, medical centers and hospitals.

Several M.D. candidates have been in the Department of Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine and Heidelberg University as the visiting scholar and joint training student. Furthermore, there are currently cooperative research projects with research Emory University, University of Washington, etc,. are being carried out. Our staffs visit other institutions as senior visiting scholars, and the seminars, lectures or meetings are held regularly.
