Introduction

In 1986, Department of Medical Ultrasonic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University had been established. Nowadays, it is one of the largest professional centers for medical diagnostic and interventional ultrasound in the southern of China, which shows outstanding achievement in the clinic, medical teaching, and research.

In 2007, approved as Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound, by Sun Yat-Sen University

In 2008, approved as Research Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound of Guangdong Province, by the Department of Health of Guangdong Province

In 2009, approved as Training Center of Standardized Vascular Ultrasound, by Chinese Medical Doctor Association

In 2011, approved as Quality-control Center of Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound of Guangdong Province

In 2011, Division of Interventional Ultrasound was established

In 2012,?rated?as “Twelve Five” Medical Key Subjects of Guangdong Province

In 2013, rated as Clinical Key Specialty of Guangdong Province and Clinical Key Specialty Construction Projects of China

Clinical Services ??

There are more than 50 advanced ultrasonic equipment in our department. With the help of these equipment, 1500-1800 patients are performed ultrasound examination per day. The department of Medical Ultrasonic includes diagnosis and interventional treatment. Meanwhile, it has been divided into four specialized subjects including abdominal ultrasound, obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound and interventional ultrasound. Some specialties, such as the ultrasound-guided percutaneous ablation therapy and prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of fetus congenital abnormality, are leading in the country. It is a training base for interventional ultrasound.

Education

Our department has undertaken a large number of teaching tasks for undergraduate students, graduate students and abroad students. There are 4 doctor supervisors and 9 master supervisors in our department. Therefore, we train master students, doctor students and postdoctor students every year, and approximately 100 further education doctors practice in our department every year. Moreover, we will hold 3 continuing education classes and 2-3 national or provincial meetings about ultrasound diagnosis or interventional ultrasound every year.

Research

We focus on researches as follows:

① Contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the disease diagnosis of liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen

② Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of fetus congenital abnormality

③Application of 3D and 4D ultrasound in the diagnosis of obstetrical and gynecological diseases

④Ultrasound diagnosis for congenital?heart disease?and valvular heart disease

⑤ Interventional ultrasound for diagnosis and treatment

In the last 5 years, we have obtained about 30 national and provincial scientific research funds, carried out several researches about diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, and published more than 150 papers in the international and Chinese journals.? We won the first prize of technology advancement of Guangdong province in 2007 and the second prize of Chinese medical technology award in 2008.

International Collaboration

In order to promote international communication,?there is a close cooperation between our department and some famous ultrasound centers in the United States, Britain, and Japan. To date, some cooperative researches have been finished and some are being carried out. Moreover, we will help 2-4 doctors go abroad to study and exchange experience every year.
