Introduction
Center of?Gastrointestinal Surgery ranks top 5 in China, which became the National Major Specialty in 2002 and the Provincial Class-A major specialty in 2000. It was the first gastrointestinal subspecialty in China, which was built up in 1964. It was also one of the first department in China which can award master, MD and Ph.D. degree. It became the national post-doctoral research station in 1995. Center for Gastrointestinal Surgery always acts as the leader in gastrointestinal surgery in China, especially in South China. It has many records, such as the national largest series of D4, now named D2+ PAND, radical gastrectomy cases, the first robotic surgery in South China, one of the first institutions which take MDT as routine medical model in China, one of the first institutions which put ERAS into routine clinical practice in China, et al. Professor Wang Jipu, one of the most famous general surgeon in China, was the first chief. Professor Zhan Wenhua, the ex-president of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, was the second chief. Professor He Yulong, the president of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, is the third chief.
Clinical Services??
1.?Multiple disciplinary team (MDT) and multi-model treatment for gastrointestinal tumors, including gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), pancreatic cancer, neuroendocrine tumor (NET), et al.
2.?Clinicopatholodic and follow-up databases of gastrointestinal?tumors established from 1990s.
3.?Multi-model medical treatments,?including endoscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, traditional open surgery, peri-operative chemoradiotherapy, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, enhanced?Recovery After Surgery, et al. We host the first robotic-assisted surgery in South China.
4.?Standard and extended radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, including open and laparoscopic and robotic radical operations, especially 3-dimensionnal?or ?skeletonized and intra-sheath D2?or D2+ lymphadenectomy for advanced gastric cancer, skeletonized hepatoduodenal ligament lymphdenectomy(No.12a,b,p) for distal GC, Spleen-preserving splenic hilar lymph node dissection(No.10), ?therapeutic extended lymphadenectomy (para-aortic lymphadenectomy) in selected patients. The prognosis of gastric cancer, esp 5-year survival rate of advanced gastric cancer was most improved up to 73.1% for stageⅡ, 55.6% for Ⅲa, 40.0% for stage?Ⅲb?gastric cancer.
5.?Multiple disciplinary team (MDT) and multi-model treatment for colorectal cancer, including peri-operative chemoradiotherapy, radical function-preserving (pelvic autonomic nerve preservation and neuroprotection and anal preservation) resection, translational and palliative treatments, interventional therapy (radiofrequency ablation) for liver and lung metastasis. Laparoscopic and robotic operations was popularized in colorectal?surgery.
6.?Thoracoscopic combined with laparoscopic operation for esophageal cancer with advantages of mimimally invasive surgery, enhanced recovery, and lower?morbidity and mortality.
7.?Multi-model treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)?including peri-operative targeted drug chemotherapy, radical and combined organ resection, gene detection, targeted drug concentration detection, and therapeutic effect evaluation. The first clinicopathologic database and largest cases, and first RCT of post-opeartive imatinib in China.
8.?Multi-model treatment for?retroperitoneal tumors, such as liposarcoma, fibrosarcoma, et al.
9.?Surgical treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
10.?Treatment for abdominal wall hernia, hemorrhoids, anal fistulas.
11.?Nutritional therapy.
Education
Our center is the first batch of masters and doctorate units in China, and began to recruit postdoctoral researchers in 1995. Now we have 11 doctoral supervisors, 14 master mentors.
Research
1.?Basic research: mechanism of lymphatic metastasis for gastric cancer, the role of stem cells in gastric cancer, the mechanism of IBD, gut flora.
2.?Clinical research: extended lymphadenectomy for advanced gastric cancer, enhanced recovery after surgery, low calorie perioperative nutrition support, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery.
International Collaboration
1.?Collaboration with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The College of Surgeons of Hongkong in surgical training. We became the international training center in 2010. Two professors are international examiners, two surgeons have passed the Conjoint Membership Examination.
2.?Collaboration with Johns Hopkins?University in clinical research and basic research. One associate professor has finished one-year training in clinical research and published two SCI papers in Annals of Surgery?(IF=8.5) and successfully applied for one National Natural Science Fund. One surgeon has finished one-year basic research.
3.?Collaboration with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in basic research. One professor has finished two-year research and published 7 SCI papers, one of which is published in Oncogene (IF=7.5), and successfully applied 5 fundings.
