Introduction

Being established in 1992, our Surgical Intensive Care Unit was one of the five domestic ICU training bases supported by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China. As pioneer of critical care medicine in China, our team was dedicated to the field of severe surgical patient management for years. With the development of academic discipline, Surgical Intensive Care Unit expanded into two separate wards in 2014, including Unit One and Unit Two of Critical Care Medicine. In Unit One there are 18 beds, 11 physicians, including 1 professor/chief physician, 5 associate professor/associate chief physicians, 1 lecturer/attending physician, 4 residents and 1 respiratory therapist. The Department of Critical Care Medicine was certified as national clinical key discipline by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China. Dr. Xiangdong Guan, the Chief Director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, is the director of Guangdong Province ICU quality control center and the chairman of the Congress of Chinese Society of Critical Care Medicine incoming.

Clinical Services????

Focusing on the demand of patients, we are committed to building a harmonious relationship between the doctors and patients. Annually about 1000 surgical patients were treated by our team, and 85-93% patients were rescued. The main treatment of diseases include sepsis, septic shock, hypovolemic shock, cardiogenic shock, obstructive shock, severe pneumonia, acute severe pancreatitis, multiple injuries, thymoma and myasthenia gravis crisis, acute peritonitis , thoracic abdominal aortic aneurysm, organ transplantation, combined with perioperative patients with organ dysfunction. The current characteristic medical programs are as follows: 1. Hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism monitoring (SWAN-GANZ floating catheter, the lung heat dilution, CD-flow, bedside ultrasound monitoring), 2. Organ support (mechanical ventilation, CRRT, ECMO, IABP), 3. bedside brain function monitoring, 3. transdermal oxygen monitoring technology, 4. continuous cardiac output and SvO2 monitoring techniques, 5. sepsis monitor and treatment.

Education

Currently our team has one doctoral tutor and 4 master tutor. In 1998 we started to recruit master's degree student. In 2006, we took the lead in recruiting a doctorate in intensive medicine in China. In 2010, we established the department of intensive medicine and set up a major medical course in undergraduates. Since 2004, the National Seminar on Continuing Education was held every year. Since 2013, the South China Severe Forum was held every year. The audience were from the? southern China. The number of training doctors from all over the country was 30-50 per year. The Department of Critical Care Medicine is also the training base of undergraduate education.

Research

Under the guidance of the Dr. Xiangdong Guan, the Department of Critical Care Medicine has been committed to basic and clinical research in sepsis, shock, MODS, hemodynamics monitoring, sedative analgesia and etc. The programs undertook by our team include 2 National Natural Science Fund, 2 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Program major projects and several natural science funds in Guangdong Province. The research achievement was published on the well-known journals such as Crit Care Med, Crit Care. In addition, we published more than 10 SCI articles and 100 papers on Chinese core journals. We also obtained one national patent technology.
