On March 21, 2020, AMEE trainees, Prof. Guo Yubiao, Director of Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Prof. Xiong Yan, Deputy Director of Department of Emergency, left for Serbia to assist the Balkan country in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.?

Prof. Guo Yubiao points out that every country differs in their healthcare systems. The experts shall develop strategies integrating local conditions with Chinese experience.?By this way, Prof. Guo constantly puts forward constructive suggestions on prevention and control of COVID-19 in Serbia.

In the discussion on whether the ICU for infected patients should be set up in the Hospital of Military Medical Sciences Academy in Serbia, one of the best comprehensive medical institutions in Balkan, Prof. Xiong Yan strongly suggested re-locating ICU to avoid the potential cross-infection rather than setting up ICU in the hospital’s headquarters by closing central air conditioning. The President was persuaded and expressed appreciation to Prof. Xiong for her professionalism and generous sharing.

Prof. Guo is in charge of the clinical medical affairs in the Anti-Epidemic Expert Team from China to Serbia. He is Deputy Director of Guangdong Province Clinical Experts Team and Director of Clinical Expert Team on COVID-19 in FAH-SYSU.?

Prof. Xiong takes care of logistics of the Anti-Epidemic Expert Team from China to Serbia. She is the leader of both Health Emergency Reaction Team and International Medical Team in FAH-SYSU.

Their research, field visits and experience sharing have played an extremely important role in the prevention and control of COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia.

Leaders at all levels from relevant institutions in Guangdong Province ?saw the experts off in the airport, including Mr. Zhang Guangjun, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province; Mr. Duan Yufei, Director General of Health Commission of Guangdong Province; Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of Party Committee of Sun Yat-sen University; Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University and President of FAH-SYSU; Dr. Luoteng, Secretary of Party Committee of FAH-SYSU.

President Aleksandar Vucic and Serbian government officials welcomed the experts with experience fighting COVID-19 as they arrived in Belgrade, Serbian capital, on March 21, 2020.

“Serbian authorities plan to fight the COVID-19 in cooperation with Chinese experts, and have decided to start massive testing among its population”, President Aleksandar Vucic announced at a press conference on March 23, 2020.

Prof. Guo and Prof. Xiong gave FAH-SYSU customized flash disks to Serbian medical workers and officials as gifts to initiate anti-epidemic training. Each flash disk has 21 documents, including anti-epidemic training videos.
