Introduction?

The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine was established in 1963. After more than 50 years of development, she has been in the leading position among domestic hospitals and become the State Key Clinical Specialty since 2012. And she is also the current Chairman unit of the Institute of Respiratory Diseases of Sun Yat-sen University, the Internal Medicine Society of Guangdong Provinceas well asthe Health Management Institute of Respiratory Diseases. She consists of Division of Respiratory Medicine, Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Diagnosis and Interventional Therapy Center and Respiratory Outpatient Department.

Clinical Services ?

The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine attaches great importance to clinical work, providing an active patient care service in the following areas: pleural disease, airway inflammatory diseases, bronchial lung cancer, pulmonary infectious diseases, respiratory critically ill medicine and sleep apnea.Staff in the department with great enthusiasm for medicine and high quality in clinical work have successfully rescued countless patients from all over the country, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.The staff also fulfilled numerous high-end health care tasks for the hospital perfectly. The Diagnosis and Interventional Therapy Center with advanced equipment providing services include: pulmonary function testing, polysomnography,medicalthoracoscopy,fluorescent bronchoscopy and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) guided tranbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA).? The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is equipped with a variety of sophisticated equipment, responsible for the monitoring and care of medical patients with critical or complicated illnesses.

Education ??

The department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine with a doctoral and master's degree grant point is also a mobile station for post-doctoral research and a training base for national respiratory specialists. There are 2 doctoral tutors and 6 master tutors now. The department has a reputation for being the leading provider of education and trainingfor graduate students, traineesand resident doctors. Advanced study, difficult case discussion and medical imaging reading sessionwere organized regularly. TheDiagnosis and Interventional Therapy Centerprovides opportunities for Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic training with the aim of developing a division-wide training curriculum for variousclinical needs.

Research

The department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine as one of the National Bases for new drug clinical trials has accumulated a wealth of experience in drug clinical trials over years. Research results of the pleural disease team led by Professor Xie Canmao were cited by a number of international guidelines and textbooks. In recent years, a series of achievements had been also acquired on the research of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer, including more than 10 projects supported by the foundations from the nation, province or the university, 6 academic monographs, over 100 papers published (over 40 indexed in the SCI) and 4 technology patents.
