Introduction?of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1982, which is the first modern rehabilitation department in medical colleges all around China. It was identified as the first WHO Collaborating Center for Rehabilitation in China in 1983. Till now, there are only two? WHO collaborating centers in the mainland of China. In 2012, our department was approved as the training center for stroke screening, prevention and rehabilitation by The Ministry of Health, also honored the Key Clinical Specialist Units in Guangdong province. At the end of 2013, our Department was awarded the National Key Clinical Specialist Construction Unit, which is the only one of rehabilitation medicine department in Guangdong province. We have been keeping Top 10 in Fudan ranking list since the very beginning till now. With compassion, hope and creativity as the hallmarks of our services, we keep on striving for the full functional recovery of people with disabilities and helping them returning back to the community.
Clinical Services
Our inpatient section has 80 open beds in ward, serving nearly 2000 patients every year. The outpatient section provides 30,000 times of services every year. Our department has established well-organized mechanisms for the processing of complex symptoms and disease diagnosis as well as treatment, including cooperation with other clinical departments within our hospital or with those in other hospitals. Our clinical services mainly focus on orthopedics disease, neurorehabilitation of stroke, Parkinson's disease, lung function, and ICU post-surgery rehabilitation. We have physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST) and prosthesis and orthosis (P&O) units.?Our department now are well known as the national rehabilitation medical clinical center with international influence.
Education
The teaching and research section of Rehabilitation Medicine was established in 1982, which was the first medical academy set up the “Rehabilitation Medicine” as the elective course for Clinical Medicine students and edited teaching book of 《Rehabilitation Medicine》 as this major for undergraduate in China. In 2003, the department of Rehabilitation Therapy was established and cultivated students to obtain four-year bachelors degree in this major following the guidance and requirements of The World Confederation for Physical Therapy(WCPT).
High-level personnel training system is refined and continued improved. The department became training center of master and doctor education and postdoctoral workstation of Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy in 2003. In 2012, Sun Yat-sen University cooperated with New York University to offer advanced postgraduate courses in Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy.
Our department was approved as the first batch of rehabilitation medicine specialist training demonstration by the Ministry of Health in 2006. We have trained a lot of specialized physicians of rehabilitation medicine, and trainees are enrolled from all over the country every year.?
Research
Our research is primarily focused on the basic and clinical studies on neurological disorders (e.g. stroke, Parkinson’s disease, etc.), musculoskeletal diseases, movement disorders and intern rehabilitation. We now own two research laboratories: motor recovery research laboratory and cognitive neuroscience laboratory of speech and hearing. These two labs are well equipped with many advanced devices, including the EEG recording and analysis system, the virtual reality training system, the gait & posture analysis system, and the robot rehabilitation system. We are capable of conducting a variety of studies to explore the behavioral, biomechanical, and neuroimaging mechanisms of limb and speech motor disorders. Until now, we have obtained many research grants funded by the central and local governments, including 14 grants from National Natural Science Foundation, 1 grant from Guangdong Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar, and more than 20 provincial and municipal scientific research grants. Our department has published over 70 SCI papers in the internationally-recognized journals including Journal of Neuroscience, NeuroImage, Brain Stimulation, and Human Brain Mapping. Also, we have published over 60 papers in Chinese in the domestic well-known journals.?
International Collaboration
In the past few years, our department has been collaborating with a number of
internationally-recognized universities and research institutes, such as Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, TIRR Memorial Hermann, Northwestern University, Rush University Medical Center,,Dundee University, KTH, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, WHOCC center at Hong Kong etc. ?The collaborations cover a broad range of rehabilitation, including neurorehabilitation, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and rehabilitation of speech/language disorders. We have made advanced progress in academic exchange, personnel training, and research/teaching collaborations. In particular, from 2013-2018, three of doctoral students have studied more than two years as joint program in University of Florida, Rusk institute and Rush University, USA and two staff got funding from Chinese Scholar Council (CSC) and collaborated as vising scientist at TIRR and Rush, USA. We have successfully received financial support from the international joint research program and published dozens of high-level research articles in a few international journals.
