Center for Reproductive Medicine

Introduction

Reproductive Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, which was founded in 1989, is one of the nation’s leading fertility centers. Our center has been the pioneer in the field of cutting-edge assisted reproductive technology. The first intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) babies in China was born at our center in 1996 and 2000, respectively. During 2002 and 2003, our center received accreditations by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for clinical utilization of IVF and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), ICSI and PGD, as well as artificial insemination by husband (AIH). In 2005, our center became one of the first MOH-certified training centers. Our center also operates the Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine of Guangdong Province.

Patient Care ??

Our center offers top-quality patient care that benefits a large variety of patients at a stable, high success rate. Approximately 6,000 IVF cycles are being conducted annually with clinical pregnancy rates around 50%. More than 4,500 frozen-thawed ET cycles are undertaken per year and the pregnancy rate exceeds 50%. The annual intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle number is 1,300 with the pregnancy rate of about 13%. PGD of thalassemia, chromosomal translocations and other rare hereditary diseases have also been routinely performed.

Education????

As one of the MOH-certified training centers of Human Assisted Reproductive Technology, our center is committed to both clinical training of fertility specialists in China and postgraduate education of medical students. We emphasized solid mastery of basic skills and knowledge, excellent competency, considerable development potentials and international competitiveness in postgraduate education. From 2005 to 2016, the number of enrolled graduate students was 103, including 60 Master degree candidates and 43 Doctoral degree candidates, with 59 Master degree graduates and59 Doctoral degree graduates.

Research

We have been conducting biomedical investigations on PGD techniques, human embryonic stem cells, cryopreservation of germ cells and tissues etc. We have received substantial grants from national, provincial and municipal scientific funding authorities. The team of our center has published more than 100 papers in biomedical peer-reviewed journals, including more than 50 SCI-indexed publications in?Human?Reproduction, Clinical Chemistry?and other high-profiled journals in the relevant discipline.

International Collaboration

Our center has cooperated with Prof Kanpu Xu from Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University in the Training Program for the Technology of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis under the support of grant from China Medical Board. In this program, we constructed a center with a systematic and integrated training schedule and necessary equipments for the training and education of the specialist including the doctors and technicians who will provide PGD services for the couples with genetic disorders.
