Introduction

The Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1958, which is one of the earliest neurosurgical center in China. To data, the department owns 120 ward beds plus 10 NICU beds; 70 medical staffs including 23 neurosurgeons. Department of Neurosurgery has been leading role among the central-south China area in clinical service,，neurosurgical research and medical education. Department of neurosurgery is the National Key Clinical Specialist of China, Provincial Key Clinical Specialist of Guangdong Province. Meanwhile, Department of Neurosurgery is the Chairman Unit of Neurosurgery branch of Guangdong Doctor Medical Association, Former Chairman Unit of Neurosurgery branch of Guangdong Medical Association and the Deputy Chairman unit of ?China Pituitary Adenoma Specialist Council (CPASC)?

Clinical Services ??

About 3000 operations are done in our neurosurgery department annually. The department is made up with 9 different neurosurgical sub-specialist groups, such as pituitary adenoma group, skull-base group, neurovascular group, meningioma group, glioma group, functional-neurosurgery group, pediatric neurosurgery group, trauma group and spinal cord-spine group. Our clinical services has been continuously the leading position in China in those fields of pituitary adenoma, skull base tumor, brain stem tumor, deep middle line tumor, spinal cord disease, cerebra-vascular disease and glioma. The department of neurosurgery possesses 5 special operation rooms including 1 hybridization operation room and 1 intra-operative MRI operation room, which is still the only one in Guangdong province. Besides, our department also owns several world’s leading equipment such as: 4 Zeiss Pentro 800 microscopes, Brainlab Navigation system, Storz HD neuro-endoscopes et al.?

Education???

Education programs comprise undergraduate students, graduate students and neurosurgical specialist training. The department of neurosurgery owns 7 Ph.D/MD tutors, 9 master tutors. Until now, 76 graduate students had finished their training and graduated from our department. The department of neurosurgery is the National Neurosurgery Specialist training Center and the National Resident Training Base of China.

Research

The research fields contain cerebrovascular disease, pituitary adenoma, glioma, spinal cord intramedullary lesions and functional neurosurgery and other related areas. Remarkable progressions have been made. The department of neurosurgery won 5 ministerial/ provincial research wards, taking charge of 21 numbers National Natural Science Foundation grants of China, including 1 National Key Research program. Total funding of recent 5 years reaches as high as 27 million. Research articles have been published in many different top journals including?Cancer Cell, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Neuro-Oncology, Stoke?and so on.?

International Collaboration

Our department already established long term and practical collaboration with The Department of Neurosurgery, MD Anderson Cancer; Neuroendocrine Laboratory of Harvard University Massachusetts General Hospital; Department of Neurosurgery, UCLA et al. Joint Publications includes Cancer Cell, Cancer Research, Stoke and so on. More than 5 junior neurosurgeons were trained in above neurosurgical centers for more than two years.?
