Introduction of the Department of NEUROLOGY?
The Department was founded in 1954 as the first neurology department in Guangdong Province. With a history of over 60 years, it has developed into a preeminent medical, research and academic center and the premier location for talent development of neurology in China. The Department has been recognized as the National?Key?Clinical?Department by the National Health Commission, and?the National?Key?Discipline?by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It is composed of the Neurological Section I, II, III, the Neurological Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Clinical Neurophysiological Section, the Neurological Laboratory, the Neurological Emergency Room, the Neurological Section for Outpatients and the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases. With the supports of Chinese government, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City and Sun Yat-sen University, the department enjoys a reputation as a top-tier neurology department nationally and a renowned neurology department internationally. Now, standing at a new starting point, the Department is equipped with a globally aware outlook and is striving to become a world-class center integrating the scientific research, the training of high-grade specialized talents, and the consultation and rescue of intractable and critical cases.?
?
Clinical Services ??
?
The Department serves over 3000 inpatients and 200,000 outpatients annually. Based on its advanced technology, the Department has successfully diagnosed and cured many critical, difficult and rare diseases.
1. Neurological Section I is a platform for diagnosis and management of intractable neurodegenerative and neurogenetic cases. It is a regional consultation platform for neuromuscular disorders equipped with electromyography, imaging or ultrasound guided muscle biopsy, and genetic counseling.
2. Neurological Section II is a stroke center equiped with stroke unit and specialized team for endovascular therapy of ultra-early stage ischemia stroke patients. It has the ability to screen causes of cryptogenetic stroke using high resolution MRI and TCD bubble test.
3. Neurological Section III is the division of functional neurology, which mainly focus on using clinical scales, long term video EEG, polysonmography and other neurophysiological equipments to monitor the function of the nervous system.
4. NICU is dedicated to the field of severe neurological and postoperative patient management including endovascular therapy, deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, intracranial hypertension, central respiratory failure etc..
5. Neurological Emergency Room is equipped with 24 hour stroke green channel, CT angiography, CT perfusion for candidates evaluation of endovascular therapy.
6. Neurological Section for Out-patient sets up 11 specialized clinics covering all branches of neurology.

Education
?
The Department was approved to be the training base for high-grade neurologists in China early in 1974, became master and doctorial station in 1980 and 1986 respectivelyand turned into postdoctoral station in 1996. Now we have 14 supervisors forPhD. and 24 supervisors for master students. Most of them have training and working experiences in oversea leading universities. The Department has already cultivated hundreds of postgraduate students. Some of them have already appointed as academic leaders or even the Distinguished Professor of Yangtze Riverin some famous medical institutions in China. The Department is the national base for the standardized training of neurological residents, and the biggest clinical teaching base of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing neurology education in Sun Yat-sen University. The Department routinely hosts international and national academic events. Young teachers have their teaching skills certified from The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and won several prizes in the teaching competitions in hospital, university and national level in consecutive years. Moreover, number and quality of teaching papers are improving.?

Research
The Department has become the Southern China International Cooperation Base for Early Intervention and Functional Rehabilitation of Neurological Diseases (2015), Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory?for?Diagnosis and?Treatment?of?Major Neurological?Diseases (2014),Guangdong?Provincial Engineering?Center?for?Major Neruolgoical?Disease Treatment (2015), Guangzhou Clinical and Translational Research Center for Major Neurological?Diseases (2016) and Guangdong Provincial Translational Medicine Innovation Platform for Diagnosis and Treatment of Major Neurological Disease (2018). The Department mainly focus on three major research directions including stroke, neurodegenerative diseases and neurogenetic disorders. It also sets up a well-established registration mechanism for clinical data and participates in international RCTs. The Departmenthave won The Second Prize for National Science&Technology Progress. In the past five years (2012-2016), it have 81 scientific research projects approvalat the provincial and ministerial or national level, including 24 projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China. It also published more than 330 articles within 5 years, 146 of which are included in SCI cited journals. The Department successfully held the 21th Zhongshan International Summit of Neurology in 2018 which is an annually meeting for academic exchange of neurologyinternationally.
