Introduction

The Department of Nuclear Medicine is a major department for molecular imaging and radio-nuclide therapy. Currently, the department employs 21 staff memebers and researchers and covers a variety of clinlcal and research fields. The staff includes dedicated physicists, radiochemist and thchologists. The departement operates one cyclotron, three hot cells, two PET/CT scanners, one SPECT/CT scanner and one micro PET/CT. More than five PET tracers are in active use at the department including 18F-FDG, 13N-ammonia, 18F-Dopa, 68Ga-DOTA, 68Ga-PMSA, 11C-CFT, 11C-MET and so on. The department has a proud history within 131-iodine therapy, 32-phosphorus contact therapy in southern China.

The department is part of the National Key Discipline and has three major focus areas: To provide a state-of-the-art diagnostic and theraputic services to patients, to deliver high quality scientific research independently and in close collaboration with partners, and to provide high quality pre- and post-graduate education and training.?

Clinical Services

Using state of the art facilities, our department?provides a full range of clinically focused diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures, including bone imaging, functional studies of renal and gastrointestinal physiology, tumor imaging, PET/CT, SPECT/CT imaging, 131-indine thearpy and 32-phosphorus contact therapy.

All PET/CT images are performed on equipment with integrated 16-slice multidetector CT scanners, allowing full diagnostic CT scans to be scheduled and acquired during the same imaging session to optimize patient convenience. Members of the division hold daily diagnostic read-out conferences to review and correlate PET and CT scans in order to provide the best possible diagnostic information.

Education

The?department of nuclear medicine has two doctoral supervisors and three master supervisors, offering?intensive training for the next generation of specialist nuclear?physicians.?Our pre- and post-graduate programes provide future nuclear physicians with advanced specialized training. Alumni of these programs sever in high-level positions with prestigious nuclear medicine departments in southern China.

Research

The department is characterized by a very close interaction between clinical and research activities, providing a fundamental platform for the development of new sensitive biomarkers, the improvement of diagnostic efficacy, and the evaluation of novel treatments.?We have got a lot of research funding from national and?provincial?science foundation in the past decades, and have obtained lots of achievements on the development of novel biomarkers and the accurate diagnosis of cerebral tumors.

International Collaboration

In 2012, our department started a collborative program with Prof. Kung from the University of Pennsylvania?to promote the application of novel PET tracers in China.
