Introduction
Department of pancreatobiliary surgery is an important subspeciality of general surgery, which is the national key specialty. There are 44 beds in the department, with nearly 1,200 inpatients and 1,000 operations each year. The turnover rate of each hospital bed is 33.68 per year. There are 14 doctors, including 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 4 attending doctors and 1 resident doctor.
Clinical Services ? ????
The department is the tertiary referral center for various surgical diseases of pancreas, bile duct, liver and spleen in southern China. We have rich experiences in surgical treatment for various malignant and benign diseases of pancreas, bile duct, liver and spleen, including pancreaticoduodenectomy with vascular reconstruction, curative resection for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, resection of complicated hepatocellular carcinoma, and surgical management of complicated hepatolithiasis. Moreover, da Vinci robotic-assisted and laparoscopic operations, including robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy and robot-assisted or laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy, are performed expertly in our department and in a leading position in South China.

Pancreatobilliary surgery department is one of the important training bases of the Standardized Training of Residents. We recruit 1-2 Ph.D. and 2-3 master candidates each year. There are 6 PhD candidates and 7 master degree candidates right now. Additionally, we recruit 15-20 surgeons for further training from other hospitals doctors each year. Our department takes part in lecturing surgery for 5-year and 8-year program undergraduates, and training of internships.
Research
Over the past 5 years, we have obtained four grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China and 15 grants from Guangdong Province. There are more than 50 papers published in journals both domestic and abroad, including nearly 30 SCI articles. Our department also published 2 academic books. The basic researches include the molecular mechanisms of tumor--suppressive effects of EYA4 gene on pancreatic cancer, early-diagnostic and prognostic values of miRNA expression profile in serum circulation in hepatocellular carcinoma, photodynamic therapy for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, and epidemiologic study of gallbladder carcinoma etc.
Personnel Training and Academic Positions
The department emphasizes on personnel training and continuing medical education. Nearly half of faculties in our department had experiences of study in USA. Some faculties have important positions in various national and/or provincial medical associations. Professor Yin Xiaoyu, the department chief, is the vice chairman of the biliary cancer committee of Anti-Cancer Association of China, the standing committee member of pancreatic disease committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and member of the pancreatic group of surgery branch of Chinese Medical Association.
