Introduction

The Department of Anesthesiology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was founded in 1958 and currently is a preeminent clinical, academic and research center in South China, also ranks as one of the top ten centers in China. A total of 111 medics practice in our department, including 8 professors/chief physicians, 16 associate professors/associate chief physicians, 3 PhD supervisors and 17 postgraduate supervisors. Over the years, our department has been granted as a national training center of anesthesia management, intensive monitoring and care for critical patients since 1994, and became one of the first national key clinical departments and national key discipline of anesthesiology in 2010 and 2011 respectively. We had been ranked as top 10 specialties for 5 consecutive years and have become the chairmen and vice-chairmen department of Anesthesiologist Division ofboth Guangdong Medical Association and Guangdong Medical Doctor Association.As a member of a general teaching hospital and in order to meet the needs of requirements from Sun Yat-sen University, we have proposed our notion and direction for progress of anesthesiology: clinical care as our root, academic work as our major and scientific research as our strength.

Clinical Services ? ??

Currently, the department of anesthesiologyat the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen Universityis the largest anesthesia department in South China, which offers excellent patient care andstandard education for medical students and residents. Each year, anesthesia services areprovided for more than 30,000 procedures in 48 operating rooms for different departments, such as general surgery, orthopedics, vascular surgery, liver surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, cerebral surgery, facial surgery, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, thoracic and cardiac surgery, pediatric surgeryand various types of transplants. It has developed into a modern department encompassing clinical anesthesia, surgical intensive care, andpain medicine.Our doctors are expertise at perioperative life support and organ protection, target controlled infusion and individualized medication treatment, accurate visualizationtechnique for nerve block, difficult airway management, anesthesiafor organ transplantation, and pain medicine.With the closely cooperation with other surgical departments, our patientsare served with high quality and safecare.

Education

Currently, we have 3 PhD supervisors and 17postgraduatesupervisors, who mentor the students doing clinical or scientific researches. Each year, almost ten masters and doctors were graduated. Our department also provide standard residency program provided to residents with comprehensive education, training and research opportunities in anesthesia under the mentorship of our clinicians. There is also trainee doctor program to educate anesthetists from primary hospital to improve their clinical skills with the help of our clinicians.

Research

Innovative researcheswere conductedhere with the goal of improving patient outcomes, quality of life and overall care,focused oncorresponding fields including perioperative liquid treatment, developing brain neurotoxicity, perioperative treatmentfor organ transplantation, intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury, distal limb ischemia and reperfusion injury, and so on. In recent 5 years, we have published more than 150 SCI and EI articles in variousfamous journals like Anesthesiology, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Anesthesia & Analgesia, European journal of pain, Shock, Anaesthesia, Critical Care Medicine. Moreover, we acquired plenty of funds to support our research work, including 13 National Science Foundations, 42 provincial science foundations, and several medical patents.

International Collaboration

Withclose cooperation withhealth centers and universities around the world, significant achievements were made in recent years. From 2012, we have been working closely with Prof.Ye Jianghong on the field of neuroscience, who is from RUTGERS New Jersey Medical School. Several provincialfoundations had been achieved with efforts of both sides. There is also an international personnel training plan in our department to send young doctors aboard and broaden their horizon. During 2003-2004, Dr. Nan Jiang studied at the department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital as a visiting scholar.Dr. Ying Xiao have completed 12 months Fellowship attachment in the department of Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care from 30 October 2007 to 25 October 2008 and had been trained in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Therapy at the Orthopedic University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany from 24 October 2016 to 22 December 2016 on ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia which then hlepful for our department to set up a visualization technique workshop.From March 16th to April 21st 2017, Dr. Tao Zhang attended a training program to learn advanced technologies and management of perioperative patients as visiting scholar at the Department of Anesthesiology, University Medical Center of Erlangen, Germany.
