Introduction

The department is divided into two divisions, one of which specializes in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Rheumatology, and the other specializes in Endocrinology & Genetic Metabolic Disease. It is an important base in South China for medical service, research, education and postgraduate training in the fields?of pediatrics, pediatric hematology-oncology and endocrinology & genetic metabolic disease.

The Division of Hematology-Oncology is selected as a National Key Clinical Specialty and South China Pediatric Leukemia Cooperation Treatment Center by National Ministry of Health, and is responsible for the formulation of guidelines and clinical pathways for the diagnosis and therapy of pediatric leukemia treated in Guangdong province.

The Division of Endocrinology & Genetic Metabolic Disease is among the largest and leading destinations for the treatment of the diseases?in China. It?has been?in charge of the conduction of the national cross-sectional study of sexual maturation in China, and?initiated and drafted the national guidelines for diagnosis and treatment?of precocious puberty and congenital adrenalhyperplasia due to?21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Many of the doctors in the department hold important positions in national and Guangdong medical associations, and have important influences in their corresponding academic fields?in the national wide.

Clinical Services??????

It is well known that the doctors and nurses in?the department provide high quality medical service?to?patients who come from all over the country as well as abroad.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology-oncology and Rheumatology: Children with leukemia account for the largest part of hospitalized patients in this division. The treatment outcomes of leukemia as well as solid tumors are comparable to those in the world. Patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia have an event-free survival of 100% till now treated in Southern China APL Multicenter Cooperation Group chaired by the division. The doctors in this division are also specialized in rheumatic disease and are among the few of specialists in this field in South China.

The Division of Endocrinology & Genetic Metabolic Disease: The doctors focus on “growth and development”?of children and provide state-of-art diagnosis, treatment and clinical management to children with endocrine disorders including the disorders of pituartary, adrenal gland, thyroid, pancreas and gender, and endocrine tumors and inborn errors of metabolism.

Education?????

There are 1 PhD tutor and 6?master degreed tutors responsible for postgraduate medical education in the department, attracting postgraduate studies from all over the country as well as abroad. The department also undertakes national continuing medical education and clinical training programs for pediatricians including pediatric hematologists and endocrinologists. It has long been recognized that PEDATRICS is a high-quality course offered by the pediatricians in this hospital, and is awarded as an elaborate course of Guangdong province. In addition, many of the pediatricians in this department have been awarded the title of “University/Hospital Excellent Teacher” and published papers on the teaching of pediatrics. ?

Research

The doctors in the department have undertaken many research projects supported by the National/Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Funds, and the Science and Technology Planning Projects?of Guangdong/Guangzhou.?The department is a national drug clinical trial institution. The research works include clinical trials and basic medical research, and many influential papers have been published. In addition, they have won several prizes for Guangdong Provincial Science & Technology Progress. ?
