Introduction

The Department of Gynecology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is the?most famous clinical, educational and research center of gynecology in Guangdong Province. We were approved to be the training base of resident physician as well as gynecological?endoscopy by the national ministry of health in 2006. In 2010, we were approved to be one of the National Key Clinical Specialties. There are totally 158 Ward beds in our department. The mean number of out-patients is about 300, 000 / year; the mean number of discharged patients is 5,700 / year; the mean number of surgeries is 4,400 / year. Patients are from all around China, Hongkong, Macao and even from Southeast Asia. Our department is famous for gynecologic endoscopy as well as minimally invasive surgery. We are able to diagnose and treat the common gynecological diseases and difficult cases of gynecology, which make our department to be the most influential gynecological department in South China.

Clinical Services??

Our department was the earliest department that carried out laparoscopy in China. After many years of development and persistent training, we are able to carry out different kinds of endoscopic minimally invasive surgeries. Such as: laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy as well as para-aortic lymphadenectomy, laparoscopic surgery of early stage ovarian cancer, laparoscopic resection of bowel endometriosis, laparoscopic resection of ureter endometriosis, laparoscopic vaginoplasty?using sigmoid colon, laparoscopic vaginoplasty?using the peritoneum, hysteroscopic endometrial resection, hysteromyomectomy, hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, et al. Professor Yao Shuzhong invented a new kind of uterine manipulator, which is widely used in laparoscopic hysterectomy as well as radical hysterectomy all around China. Since 2006, our clinical team firstly carried out laparoscopic resection of bowel endometriosis and then ureter endometriosis. And the diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases of endometriosis is very famous in China. In 2009, Professor Xie Hongzhe invented transvaginal resection of cesarean scar pregnancy?as well as cesarean scar?diverticulum, which provides?a simple and safe way to treat these two diseases.

Education ?

There are 5 tutors?of?doctoral?degree candidates?and 8 tutors of master degree candidates. We have trained about 80 masters, 16 doctors as well as hundreds of visiting physicians.

Research

The major research areas include: the safety and development research of different kinds of gynecological diseases using endoscopy; the clinical and basic?research of endometriosis; the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic tumors (cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer); the basic research of gynecologic tumors. In the recent 5 years, we have gained 5 national natural science foundation of China, 40 basic research foundations of Guangdong Province as well as Guangzhou City. And we also have published?more than 90 SCI papers and 180 Chinese papers.

International Collaboration

The research team of cervical cancer focuses on investigating the pathogenesis of cervical cancer, especially on the relationship between HPV infection and cervical cancer. Based on their work on the genetic programming?of HPV using CRISPR, Professor Hu Zheng and his team applied an international collaboration?foundation from the national natural science foundation of China in 2017. They are further exploring the complex mechanism of how continuous infection of HPV leads to cervical cancer. And they are also attempting to find new prevention and treatment strategies for cervical cancer based on precision medicine.
