Introduction

The department of Urology of the first affiliated hospital of Sun yat-sen University is the key discipline of colleges and universities in Guangdong province, the key discipline of Guangdong province “Five One”?project, the key discipline of Guangdong clinical subjects, the key discipline of the first affiliated hospital of Sun yat-sen University, the specialist training base of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the demonstration base of the national residents standardization training bases, the 'national county hospitals talent cultivation plan" urinary calculi treatment training base of the Chinese Medical Association, the “Andrological doctors training base”?of the Chinese medical association andrological branch.

The Urology department consist two wards, urodynamics room, transrectal ultrasonography room, outpatient cystoscope examination center, clinical research center, urological and andrological outpatient department. Advanced equipment serving the clinic include Da-Vinci robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery system, 3-d high definition laparoscopic surgery system, electronic laparoscopic surgery system, ultrasonic lithotripsy and draining system (EMS), holmium laser therapeutic apparatus, thulium laser therapeutic apparatus, radiofrequency ablation system, microwave ablation therapeutic apparatus, urodynamics analyzer, nocturnal penile erectile function analyzer, standard resectoscope and plasma resectoscope.

The department have about 40000 annual outpatient visits, almost completed the amount of 1000 of outpatient surgery and cystoscope. The examination room completed about 500 urodynamics examination and about 1000 transrectal utrasonography and biopsies every year. The total number of inpatient surgery every year is over 2500.

Clinical Services

The discipline consists of five main branches, which are urogenital tumors, urinary calculi, prostate disease, urinary continence and plastics and andrology. Based on traditional open surgery, the department mainly develop the minimal invasive technology of urinary diseases. The department also import various new technologies and methods to improve the quality of clinical services.

Despite the routine surgeries conducted in Grade A Class 3 hospitals, the department also conduct complex surgeries like recurrent giant pheochromocytoma resection, adrenocortical carcinoma resection, radical cystectomy and orthotopic neobladder, sexual-function preserving radical prostatectomy, sexual-function preserving retro-peritoneal lymph node dissection, complex urinary fistulas prothesis, complex posterior urethral stricture surgery, urethroplasty, TVT-O, complex hypospadias surgery, complex bladder exstrophy surgery and andrological microsurgery, etc.

Education

There are 9 doctoral supervisors and 9 master’s supervisors who have cultivated 19 doctors and 10 masters during the last three years. The department undertakes the theoretical courses, animal experiments, clinical practice and noviciate ?of sun yat-sen university every year. Each year, nearly 10 residents are enrolled in the resident standardized training program. About 30 doctors from different hospitals around the country come to the department for further education. The meeting of 'new progress and new technology of urology" is held annually. The 'south China minimally invasive training class" is held every six months.

Research

During the last 3 years, the research team of the department have published about 100 papers, including 50 cited by SCI, with a total impact factor beyond 100. At the same time , the department also got 25 scientific research funds, including 10 Natural Science Foundation of China and 1 national key research and development program. Total funding for research have amounted to 27 million 790 thousand. The department also won a number of Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of education, Guangdong province and Guangzhou.
